Damp proofing in Hanover

Hanover is row after row of small Victorian terraced houses climbing the hillside east of The Level, popular with families and much-loved locally. They’re compact, solid-walled and well over a century old, which makes a handful of damp problems very common across the area.

Typical Hanover damp problems

Most Hanover homes were built without an effective damp-proof course by modern standards, so rising damp is the issue we see most: a tide mark and crumbling plaster along the ground-floor walls, often hidden behind furniture in a small front room.

The other big one is condensation and black mould. These are snug houses, and once you add new windows, draught-proofing and the moisture of everyday family life, the air has nowhere to go. It settles on cold walls and in corners, and mould follows. The fix is usually better ventilation, not damp-proofing, and we won’t sell you the latter for a condensation problem.

Small houses, tidy work

Working in a compact terrace means keeping disruption down and the site clean, which we plan for. Where rising damp has been treated, the replastering is done with salt-resistant materials so the wall finishes properly and doesn’t stain again.

Hanover homes also share party walls and similar construction, so issues that appear in one house often turn up next door. If a neighbour has had damp, it’s worth a check.
